After training as a theoretical physicist at TU Munich, I moved into genomics at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), and then worked on probabilistic models for pattern detection at the University of Cambridge (Cavendish Labs & Genetics).
In 2005 I took up the WWTF Vienna Science Chair of Bioinformatics at Boku University Vienna (www.bioinf.boku.ac.at), and followed a call to a full professorship in Warwick 2012 (joint appointment).
In 2019 I co-founded the Institute for Advanced Research in Artificial Intelligence together with Sepp Hochreiter and Michal Kopp (IARAI, http://www.iarai.org/, 2019-2023).
