The Vehicle Safety Institute (VSI) is a leading scientific institution specializing in crash behaviour and safety for electric vehicles and their components. Our multidisciplinary approach addresses key challenges in enhancing safety and sustainability in electric mobility over the entire life cycle. We provide innovative solutions for future electric mobility through cutting-edge experimental and simulation-based methodologies.
Our core competence lies in the application of a holistic problem-solving approach, including:
· Identifying safety challenges, research gaps and industry needs
· Developing specialized test setups, test benches, and test protocols
· Conducting and evaluating mechanical, electrical, thermal and combined experiments on battery cell, module, and pack level
· Advancing virtual simulation techniques through innovative modelling and validation
Combining experimental testing and simulation enhances efficiency and provides comprehensive safety solutions beyond state-of-the-art methods. Our long-standing collaborations with international OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and the Battery4Life research centre enable us to align with industry requirements, ensuring practical and applicable safety advancements in the automotive field.
As part of VSI, the Battery Safety Center Graz, established in 2020, is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to electrical, thermal, and mechanical testing of lithium-ion battery systems. Spanning 550 square meters, it provides an advanced technical environment for assessing and optimizing battery safety in real-world applications.
With our expertise and cutting-edge facilities, we welcome collaborations with industry leaders and research institutions to drive vehicle and battery safety innovation further.
